web URL redirecting

Since old URL in my personal web site directly moved to www.embl.org/cmci, I am now trying to set redirecting of the URL. One of the major method is modifying meta-tag, but this seems to be search engine un-friendly so I am now trying the other method, which is to edit .htaccess.
